Summary
This project was performed directly for the owner, AFCO Steel, in coordination with their consultant to convert the old LM Windpower facility into a bridge girder fabrication shop. Due to the project’s elevation and close proximity to the Arkansas River, the fluctuating water table posed challenges. After the existing SOG was removed, sheet piling was driven to support the soils under the remaining SOG. The machine pit was excavated to a depth of 11’6″ below the existing slab, which is roughly 6’2″ above the Arkansas River’s water level depending on the day. Flowable fill was placed in the bottom of the machine pit to provide a stable working platform. Then we installed a 2′ mat foundation with cast-in-place wide flange beam, followed by the pit walls. The two chain pit foundations on opposite ends of the machine pit were then installed, followed by the chain pit walls. The sheet piling was cut off and the SOG was patched back.
